Physarum cinereum
This slime mold looks like grey-blue pepper |
DESCRIPTION A variety of slime molds can be found on turf, including Physarum spp., Fuligo spp., and Mucilago crustacea. Their life cycles may be completed within twenty-four hours. Stages of development bring about changes in texture, shape and color. Beginning as a protoplasm, they expand and contract for mobility, thus ingesting nutrients. A protoplasm can course up grass stems and leaves. then produce the fruiting structures for sporulation. When spores are released from fruiting structures, they pair, creating a new plasmodium. |
HOST PLANT Damp decaying wood or leaves, grass and plant stems are places to find slime molds. They don't cause damage to the host, but large areas of shading may cause yellowing or weakening of the host plant.
CONTROL Slime molds can simply be swept or washed away with a sharp stream from a hose. Repeated mowing may also help. Fungicides are unnecessary.
