powdery mildew
DESCRIPTION Powdery mildew is a very common and easily identifiable fungal infection that appears as whitish spots mostly on upper leaf surfaces. The spots often spread forming a white film on the surface. It can impair growth and decrease yields, though it doesn't usually kill its host. The fungus feeds from the plants epidermal cells but doesn't spread through other tissues as most parasitic fungi do. It also differs from many other fungi in that it can germinate in fairly low humidity and doesn't necessarily need water. |
HOST PLANTS There are many families of powdery mildews affecting a wide varieties of plants. CONTROL Sanitation is a very necessary part of powdery mildew control. Proper spacing is also important because it reduces humidity and increases air circulation. Avoid overwatering. Improper pruning and overfertilization both cause succulent growth which is susceptible to fungus. The proper fungicides may be helpful. |
