Chlorophyllum molybdites
DESCRIPTION This large white mushroom has a cap 2-12" wide with buff colored scales on top. It starts knob-like and flattens out with its scales breaking up. It has free gills that turn from white to gray-green. The stalk is 4-10" tall, has a ring and discolors upon handling.
PREVALENCE The green-spored lepiota is found in lawns, pastures and meadows from California to Florida as well as New York, New Jersey and Michigan in August through September. EDIBILITY POISONOUS. This mushroom will make one extremely ill. It has made people vomit violently for one, two or more days. |
